Virginia DOC Release Scope
The Virginia Department of Corrections is a statewide system, not an Alleghany County jail. No VADOC prison was identified inside the county. The system still matters when an Alleghany Regional Jail prisoner receives a state-responsible sentence, is transferred to a state institution, or later enters state probation or parole. The local transfer ends one jail booking, but it is not release to the community.
A true VADOC release may be a discharge after the sentence ends or a departure to approved community supervision. VADOC issues release paperwork, and an active supervisee may stay visible in the public locator. Once final discharge ends custody and supervision, the agency does not promise permanent public locator coverage. Older or missing results therefore call for VADOC records and the sentencing court file.
| Status clue | Meaning | Confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| State institution | Secure state custody | Current locator result |
| District office | Community supervision | Locator and District 40 |
| Future release field | Current computation | Result and later paperwork |
| No result | Inconclusive absence | Records and court case |
Search Virginia DOC Release Records
The VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator is the correct first public search for state custody and active supervision. It covers people in state institutions, probationers and parolees supervised by district offices, people in institutional hospitals, and other stated groups. It is not described as a universal archive of all former Virginia prisoners.
Search carefully before treating an absence as meaningful. The agency says its locator updates daily and warns that data can be wrong or out of date. A future date is a projection. Preserve the exact label on the current live result rather than replacing it with an internal agency term.
- Enter at least the first three letters of the first name and the full last name, or use the seven-digit DOC ID.
- Add location, race, gender, or age range only when needed to separate similar names.
- Accept the disclaimer and compare identifying details.
- Read custody, location, supervision, and any release-date field together.
- Request the signed release or discharge record when proof is needed.
Request Virginia DOC Release Records
For documentary proof, identify the person by full name, seven-digit DOC number, facility if known, and relevant dates. Ask VADOC for the existing Order of Release or the existing release-date and release-type entry. If probation or parole applied, request the Conditions of Probation or Conditions of Parole and the discharge record needed to mark the end of supervision.
A request should not ask staff to compute a new date or write a narrative. Existing signed papers, status entries, and code tables are more precise. The court file remains useful because it supplies the judgment and later orders that gave VADOC authority. The state record then shows how the agency carried out that authority.

Use the current contact page before mailing because routing can change. If the issue began with an Alleghany jail transfer, request the local movement entry too. One document should name VADOC as receiving authority, while the state record should describe later custody or release.
Virginia DOC Facility Release Process
The VADOC facility release guidance describes a formal administrative process. Staff check legal authority, prepare papers, and address warrants or detainers before departure. Release paperwork may include an Order of Release plus probation or parole conditions. Signed documents are stronger evidence than an undated search result.
VADOC procedure also addresses transportation and exceptions. Those statewide practices should not be projected onto Alleghany Regional Jail, which has its own local operation and no published standard release time. Conversely, a county movement date should not be called the state discharge date. Each custodian records its own part of the chain.
- State-responsible
- A sentenced person whose confinement and time computation fall under state corrections authority.
- Parole
- Conditional community release from a prison sentence under supervision.
- Probation
- Court-ordered community supervision that may follow or replace confinement.
- Final discharge
- The formal end of the sentence or supervision duty.
For the county-side movement, the Alleghany Regional Jail release page explains the local transfer entry. Pairing both sources closes the gap between county departure and state arrival.
Alleghany VADOC Supervision Records
Fincastle Probation and Parole District 40 serves Alleghany County, Covington, Clifton Forge, and Iron Gate. A person released from a state institution may appear in the locator with a district office instead of a prison. That result supports a shift from secure custody to community supervision, but it does not mean all legal duties ended.
District 40 can help verify the assigned office where public confirmation is permitted. The Virginia Parole Board is separate from VADOC community supervision. A Board grant can authorize a later release process, yet it does not prove the person passed every check and departed. Compare the decision, locator, signed papers, and district status.

Service territory includes Alleghany County and Covington.
Note: A district-office result points to community supervision, while final discharge may end the locator's active coverage.
Virginia DOC Detainers and Transfers
A release date does not override an active warrant or detainer. A detainer tells another authority that it may take custody when the current term ends. VADOC checks such matters in the release process. If another jail, the U.S. Marshals, or ICE receives the person, state custody may end while detention continues.
No official source identified a state prison, BOP institution, or ICE detention site in Alleghany County. Geography cannot settle the question. Ask the releasing institution for the disposition and receiving authority, then use the correct federal or local channel. The BOP locator applies to sentenced federal prisoners. ICE's locator applies only when immigration custody is indicated.
Verify Virginia DOC Discharge Evidence
The strongest state-release packet combines the signed VADOC release entry, the court judgment or later order, the locator status captured after the event, and any supervision record. Note when each source was retrieved. A locator can lag, a future date can change, and a court order may take effect only after administrative checks.
If no result appears, try a broad name search and confirm the DOC number. Then contact VADOC records. A missing result may reflect spelling, final discharge, a group outside public locator scope, or stale information. It is not proof that the person never entered state custody. The same care applies when finding someone released from Virginia DOC after an Alleghany County case.
VADOC records should also distinguish release from parole and full discharge. Parole means the person has left prison under supervision. Discharge means the relevant sentence or supervision duty has formally ended. The public locator is most useful while custody or supervision remains active, so old release research often needs the signed paper and court file instead.
Alleghany State Custody Timeline
A state custody chain can begin at Alleghany Regional Jail, continue through VADOC intake and an institution, and end with prison release, District 40 supervision, or final discharge. Record each date with the source that owns it. The county transfer date, state admission date, projected date, actual release date, and supervision discharge date are different events.
This timeline prevents a common error. Someone may be “released” from one facility only because another authority took control. The receiving agency field links the stages. When that field is missing, ask both custodians for their existing movement entries and compare the dates rather than guessing from web silence.
