Federal BOP Release Coverage
The Federal Bureau of Prisons manages sentenced federal prisoners. It is not part of the Alleghany County jail or Virginia corrections systems, and no BOP institution was identified in Alleghany County. A federal case that began near Covington can still lead to custody in a BOP facility elsewhere. County geography therefore does not determine the correct federal search.
BOP's public locator can show release information for many former federal prisoners. Its searchable data generally covers people released after 1982. A past date and released or no-facility status is useful evidence that BOP custody ended. It does not prove freedom from a state case, local warrant, immigration hold, or another authority.
| Federal clue | What it supports | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| BOP facility | Federal prison custody | Not local-jail status |
| Past release date | BOP custody ended | Other custody may remain |
| Not in BOP custody | No current BOP institution | May involve another status |
| No result | No matching locator entry | Not proof of release |
Search Federal BOP Release Records
Use the BOP Inmate Locator for a sentenced federal prisoner. Search by first and last name, adding middle name, age, race, and sex when needed, or use a BOP register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number. Results may show name, register number, age, race, sex, release date, and location or status.
Compare identifiers before accepting a match. A projected date can change through lawful sentence computation, including First Step Act processes. A historical release date is not the same as a future estimate. Preserve the result wording and search date, then compare the federal judgment and later court orders.
- Choose name search or the correct federal identifier.
- Enter the minimum fields and broaden a failed name search.
- Match the register number and personal identifiers.
- Read the location, status, and release date together.
- Check the federal docket for sentence and later orders.
- Use BOP records when the public result cannot prove the event.
Request Federal BOP Release Records
BOP's FOIA and records route is the documentary fallback. Give the person's full name, register number, institution if known, and a narrow date range. Ask for an existing release-status or release-date record rather than a new explanation. Privacy and law-enforcement exemptions may limit disclosure about another person.
The federal court docket supplies the judgment, sentence, and later judicial orders. PACER can require an account and usage fees. The docket explains legal authority, while BOP records show the agency's custody event. Neither should be used alone when the question includes a state, county, or immigration hold.

Use the official Inmate Locator and BOP FOIA portal for federal prison records.
The Alleghany County release search covers the separate local path. A person who left Alleghany Regional Jail for a federal matter may first enter U.S. Marshals custody, not BOP.
Federal Pretrial Custody Differences
Federal pretrial detainees are generally the responsibility of the U.S. Marshals Service and may be housed under contract outside a BOP institution. A missing BOP result can therefore be normal before conviction and commitment. Search the federal docket and identify the holding authority instead of concluding that the person was released.
A court release order may authorize departure, but the physical event can be affected by another warrant or detainer. Ask for the actual holding-agency movement when proof is needed. The docket and custody record answer different questions, just as an Alleghany court order and local jail entry do.
- BOP custody
- Federal prison custody for a person committed to the Bureau of Prisons.
- USMS custody
- Federal pretrial, court, or transport custody administered by the U.S. Marshals.
- Supervised release
- Federal community supervision after imprisonment, not confinement in a BOP institution.
- Detainer
- A request or notice tied to another authority's custody claim.
Alleghany Federal Transfer Records
If Alleghany Regional Jail says a person was released to the U.S. Marshals, the local facility ended its custody but the person did not necessarily enter the community. Request the local release type, time, and receiving agency. Then use the federal case docket and authorized USMS inquiry. A later BOP result may appear only after federal commitment.
No reviewed official source identified a BOP institution within Alleghany County. Do not search by nearby geography alone or use a state locator for a federal sentence. The correct system follows the legal custodian. If BOP later reports a release date, still check whether another jurisdiction took custody.
Federal Release Date Meaning
A date in a BOP result can be historical or projected. Read the status and location with it. A past date paired with a released result supports the end of BOP imprisonment. A future date remains subject to lawful computation and later events. The federal judgment helps explain the sentence but does not by itself prove the actual departure time.
Supervised release is also distinct. It begins after imprisonment under federal court supervision and does not mean the person remains housed by BOP. For a full timeline, record the BOP release event, federal probation status where public confirmation is available, and any other custody transfer.
Note: Preserve the register number and retrieval date, since names alone can produce uncertain matches in a national system.
Federal and State Custody Conflicts
A person can have federal and state matters at the same time. The order in which authorities act depends on the actual cases and custody arrangements. A BOP release record establishes only the end of the BOP event shown. It does not clear an Alleghany warrant, VADOC sentence, ICE custody, or another county hold.
Build the sequence from records. The Alleghany jail entry identifies local departure. The federal docket gives the sentence or order. The BOP result shows federal imprisonment status. A VADOC or ICE result may reveal a later custodian when facts point there. This source-by-source method prevents a national locator from being treated as a universal release certificate.
Preserve Federal Release Evidence
Save the locator result with the exact status, date, register number, and retrieval date. Pair it with the judgment or later docket order and any BOP response. When the person passed through a local jail, keep that facility movement record as well. Together, these records show each authority's role.
For pre-1982 federal history, the public BOP locator may not be the right archive, and older material can require National Archives research. For a recent case, begin with the current locator and docket. If they disagree, seek the underlying record rather than inferring release from the absence of a name.
