Federal Immigration Custody Scope
ICE civil-immigration custody and U.S. Marshals custody are separate federal systems. Neither is an Alleghany County facility, and no reviewed official source confirmed an ICE detention contract at Alleghany Regional Jail. These channels apply only when a detainer, federal case, movement record, or reliable source points to the relevant authority.
A person who leaves the local jail for ICE or USMS has transferred. Local custody ended, but confinement may continue. The county release record should name the receiving agency. The ICE Online Detainee Locator, federal docket, or holding-agency record then continues the custody chain. A missing local name is never enough.
| Authority | Public starting point | Main limit |
|---|---|---|
| ICE | Online Detainee Locator | Recent release window is finite |
| USMS | Federal docket and holding agency | BOP search may not apply |
| BOP | Inmate Locator | Sentenced federal prison scope |
| Alleghany jail | Jail movement record | Shows local event only |
Search ICE Release Records
The ICE Online Detainee Locator accepts a nine-digit A-number and country of birth. A leading zero may be needed when the known number has eight digits. The other route uses exact biographical name, country of birth, and an optional birth date. The locator cannot search minors under 18.
Official ICE guidance says the system can include people currently detained or released from ICE custody within the last 60 days. That short period makes timing important. An absence after the window, a name variation, or a wrong identifier proves nothing. Save the query terms, date, and exact result wording.
- Confirm that an immigration detainer or ICE clue actually exists.
- Search by A-number and country of birth when available.
- Try the exact biographical route if the number is unknown.
- Compare identifiers and read custody wording closely.
- Call the official information line when the locator is inconclusive.
- Use ICE records for durable documentation where authorized.
Contact ICE Custody Information
The ICE Detention Reporting and Information Line is the official phone fallback for qualifying custody questions. It operates Monday through Friday, except federal holidays, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern and offers language assistance. Use it when the locator does not resolve an identifier or when the correct facility must be found.

ICE's FOIA route is the records fallback, though federal privacy and law-enforcement rules may restrict another person's file. Ask for the existing event or status record with identifiers and a focused date range. Do not ask the agency to construct a new custody narrative.
Trace Alleghany Detainer Transfers
Angle K is central to an Alleghany transfer. The local jail record should say whether another agency received the person. “Released to ICE detainer” means the county jail relinquished custody to immigration authorities, not that the person returned to the community. Record the date, time, release type, and receiving agency before moving to the federal search.
ICE ODLS may show a current detainee or a person recently released from ICE custody within its 60-day window. That later ICE release is a separate event from the earlier county transfer. The two dates should not be merged. If removal, release, or another federal action is at issue, rely on the responsible federal record.
- Detainer
- A notice that another authority may seek custody when a current hold ends.
- Transfer
- A change of custodian while detention continues.
- A-number
- An immigration identification number used in the ICE locator.
- Community release
- Departure from physical custody rather than delivery to another authority.
For the local half, the Alleghany Regional Jail records route explains how to ask for the receiving agency field.
U.S. Marshals Custody Records
The U.S. Marshals Service commonly handles federal pretrial, transport, and court-related custody. A federal detainee may be held in a contract facility and never appear as a current BOP prisoner. A failed BOP search therefore cannot prove release from USMS custody.
Search the federal court docket for the case, detention order, release order, judgment, and later entries. Then identify the holding agency and use an authorized, focused records request when documentary proof is needed. Privacy and law-enforcement exemptions can limit what is disclosed to someone else.
Alleghany Federal Custody Gaps
No official source reviewed found an ICE detention contract at Alleghany Regional Jail. No BOP institution or state prison was identified inside Alleghany County either. That does not bar a federal detainer or transport. It means the local jail must not be advertised as an ICE facility and federal tools should not be used as generic backup rosters.
The absence of a physical institution is itself useful. A person tied to an Alleghany arrest may be moved beyond the county. Search by legal authority, not distance. The local movement entry, court case, federal locator, and receiving agency each cover one link in that route.
Note: Confirm the receiving authority before using federal locators, since similar status words can describe very different custody systems.
ICE Release Date Evidence
A recent released-from-ICE locator result is time-sensitive evidence. Save the exact wording, A-number or matched identifiers, and retrieval date. Follow with an ICE record if the event must remain verifiable after the public window closes. A local jail date establishes only when Alleghany custody ended.
If the person does not appear, confirm spelling, country of birth, date of birth, and A-number format. Then use the information line. An error in any one field can hide a match. The under-18 restriction also means the locator cannot answer every immigration custody question.
A strong packet may contain the Alleghany transfer entry, ICE locator result, federal docket or immigration document, and later ICE custody record. Each item should be described within its own scope. No one screen proves all stages of a federal custody chain.
Federal Release Versus Removal
Release from ICE detention and resolution of an immigration matter are not synonyms. The locator's custody event does not, by itself, explain every legal outcome. Likewise, removal from the United States is not community release in Alleghany County. Use the actual immigration documents or authorized case source for the legal event.
For USMS matters, release under a federal court order differs from transport to BOP after sentencing. A docket can show the order, but the holding agency record confirms physical movement. Keeping those terms exact protects against a false conclusion drawn from one system's disappearance.
Preserve Federal Custody Evidence
Start with the source that held the person. Request the county movement record for the local exit, save the federal locator result, and retain the court or agency document that explains the next event. Note all dates and exact status phrases. If records conflict, ask the relevant custodian for the underlying entry.
The Alleghany County released inmates search covers the wider county, state, court, and notification sequence. Federal immigration and USMS sources belong in that sequence only when the facts support them. This keeps a conditional transfer channel from being mistaken for proof about every local release.
